Behaviour Tales

Many years ago I found myself called to a classroom to intervene between a student and substitute teacher. The child, as I entered the room, was in the process of throwing random items at the teacher. He did not notice me approaching. As I came closer I realized he was removing his shoe to throw, unfortunately I ended up in the line of fire!

He stopped and stared at me for a moment as we were both rather shocked before saying...."Ms. O I'm so sorry - I wasn't aiming for you!" As amusing as that is it was of course not the point which I quietly reminded him of.

I retell this story as poignant example of why relationship in behaviour must come first. In order to effectively manage children with behavioural challenges we must first gain their trust, respect and care from there we can begin to manage their behaviour in positive, proactive ways.
